When the photographer began to conceptualize his photographic essay about our timeless relationship with the BEACH-Fire Island, South Beach, Mykonos, Provincetown-he realized a book would have to out-live the ephemeral nature of fickle summer fashion.
Unlike shooting for magazines which have a shelf-life of one month he had to find a wardrobe solution which would seem 'fresh' for many years to come. Swim wear presented the most confounding challenge.
Research led Morgan to early competition shots from the 1930's Olympic Games and it was there he found the perfect garment for a timeless book...
Black Speedos. They have remained unchanged in their style and cut for over 70 years. And so, only two garments appear in BEACH: Speedos and white briefs.
Indeed, although BEACH was originally shot in it's entirety over 10 cloudless days in September '94 the book was not published until 2000, after Morgan's first publication BASIC TRAINING, (1998.)
These are NOT ink-jet reproductions.
Each fiber-based print is a custom work produced by the photographer’s master dark-room artist.
All prints are 8x10 inches, suitable for any ready-made or custom frame.
